How 5 Minutes Each Morning Transformed My Life After 50 – a Morning Routine for Women over 50
I was 56 when I got the email that changed everything.
“I think you might be my birth mother.”
After decades of wondering about the daughter I’d placed for adoption, DNA testing had brought us together. You’d think I’d be over the moon – and I was. But in the quiet moments after our first conversation, a surprising question bubbled up:
“She found me… but who exactly did she find?”
I sat there, coffee growing cold in my hands, realizing I couldn’t answer that question. Oh, I could list my roles easily enough – mother to my raised children, devoted wife, reliable employee, the one who remembers everyone’s birthdays and always says yes when someone needs help.
But who was I when I wasn’t being something for someone else?
The woman my birth daughter was getting to know – was that really me? Or was I just a collection of habits and obligations wrapped in sensible shoes and an endless to-do list?
That morning, still raw with emotion and possibility, I stumbled onto a simple practice that would change everything. Not overnight. Not dramatically. But gently, persistently, like sunrise creeping across a dark sky.
That’s when I discovered a simple practice that changed everything.
The Morning That Started It All
It was January 1st, and instead of making another list of resolutions I’d abandon by February, I tried something different. I asked myself one question:
“Who do I choose to be today?”
Not for the whole year. Not forever. Just today.
That morning, I chose to be BRAVE.
It felt a little ridiculous, declaring myself brave while still in my pajamas, drinking lukewarm coffee. But I wrote it down anyway. Then I did one small brave thing – I called a friend I’d been avoiding because our last conversation had been awkward.
That’s it. That was the whole practice. Choose an attribute. Do one small thing to embody it. Reflect at the end of the day.
Why This Works When Resolutions Don’t
Here’s what I’ve learned after doing this practice for years:
1. It’s Only About Today
You don’t have to commit to being brave forever. Just today. Tomorrow you might choose to be PEACEFUL or CURIOUS or PLAYFUL. The pressure is off.
2. Small Actions Count
Being brave doesn’t mean skydiving or quitting your job. It might mean:
- Speaking up in a meeting
- Trying a new recipe
- Saying no to something you don’t want to do
- Starting that project you’ve been postponing
3. You Already Have Everything You Need
You don’t need a gym membership, expensive equipment, or hours of free time. You just need 5 minutes and the willingness to choose.
The Ripple Effect I Didn’t Expect
What started as a simple morning practice began to shift everything:
- My inner dialogue changed. Instead of “I’m too old for that,” I started thinking, “What would a CURIOUS person do here?”
- Decision-making became easier. When you’ve already decided who you’re being today, choices become clearer. Would a CONFIDENT person apologize for her ideas? Would a JOYFUL person spend an hour scrolling through depressing news?
- I stopped waiting for permission. At our age, we’ve spent decades putting others first. This practice gave me permission to focus on my own becoming.
- The small changes added up. One brave conversation led to a renewed friendship. One creative experiment led to starting a business. One peaceful morning led to better boundaries.
Your Turn: Start Tomorrow
You don’t need to wait for Monday, next month, or next year. Tomorrow morning, ask yourself:
“Who do I choose to be today?”
Pick one attribute that calls to you:
- BRAVE
- PEACEFUL
- CREATIVE
- JOYFUL
- FREE
- WISE
- LOVING
- CONFIDENT
Take one small action that embodies that choice. Tonight, reflect on how it felt.
That’s it. That’s the practice that changed everything.
Make It Easier: Get Daily Prompts
If you’re like me and appreciate a little structure with your transformation (okay, a LOT of structure – I’m the woman who color-codes her calendar!), I’ve created something that might help.
I turned my daily practice into a guide called “Today I Choose to Be: A Year of Becoming Who You Were Meant to Be.”
Here’s what makes it special: The 365 days aren’t random – they’re thoughtfully arranged in monthly themes that build on each other.
You’ll start with courage and new beginnings in January, move into love and connection in February, embrace flexibility and growth in March… each month deepening your journey. It’s like having a wise friend who knows exactly what you need to hear, exactly when you need to hear it.
Each day offers:
- An inspiring attribute to embody (from BRAVE to WISE to PLAYFUL)
- A thoughtful quote from someone who’s walked this path
- A simple practice to make it real (I promise, nothing that requires yoga pants)
- An evening reflection question to capture your insights
By December, you’ll be amazed at who you’ve become – not because you’ve changed into someone new, but because you’ve uncovered who you’ve always been underneath all those “shoulds.”
It’s not about perfection – it’s about intention. Every single day, you get to choose who you want to be.

A Personal Note
Creating this practice saved me during a time when I felt lost. From finding my birth daughter to the last of the kids going off to college, I really started to question everything about my identity. But this daily practice reminded me that I get to choose who I become, regardless of who I’ve been.
If you’re feeling stuck, invisible, or wondering “is this it?” – you’re not alone. And it’s not too late. Not even close.
We’re not slowing down after 50. We’re just getting started.
Who will you choose to be tomorrow?
