How to Be Recharged After 50: Reclaiming Your Energy, Your Way

A few weeks ago, I hit a wall.
Not a metaphorical one — a real, full-body stop. I sat down in the middle of my living room floor with a laundry basket in my hands and thought, I can’t do this today. Not the laundry, not the emails, not one more “what’s for dinner?”

That moment didn’t come from one big thing. It was the slow, quiet drain of daily responsibilities — caregiving, work stress, financial pressures, the emotional labor of being “the strong one.” I hadn’t realized how far from recharged I really was. I was functioning. But I wasn’t rested. And I certainly wasn’t renewed.

That moment on the floor became my wake-up call: if I wanted to keep giving to others, I needed to figure out how to give something back to myself.


What “Recharged” Really Means (Hint: It’s Not Just Sleep)

Being recharged isn’t just about sleeping eight hours (though that helps). It’s about being restored in a way that makes you feel like yourself again — emotionally, mentally, spiritually, physically.

Women over 50 are often the emotional backbone for everyone around them. But recharging isn’t selfish. It’s essential. Because the truth is:

You can’t run on fumes and expect to feel like yourself.
You can’t keep pouring if your own cup is bone dry.


How to Be Recharged — Even When Life Is Still Demanding

Here’s what’s been helping me, and what I hear from the other incredible women I talk to:

1. Start With Micro-Restorations

Recharging doesn’t have to be a spa weekend (though sign me up). It starts with the small things:

  • A 7-minute walk without your phone

  • Sitting in silence with your coffee — no email, no scrolling

  • Saying no to just one thing today

  • Letting the dishes wait while you take a bath

These micro-moments add up. They say, “You matter, too.”


2. Make Space for What Fills You

Ask yourself: What restores me?
Not what should. What does.

For me, it’s sunlight. Music that hits just right. Creating something — even a Canva pin or a piece of writing that speaks my truth. For you, it might be:

  • Gardening

  • Reading for pleasure

  • Journaling

  • Listening to birds

  • Laughing (not small chuckles — belly laughs)

Recharging means letting more of those things in — even if only in five-minute doses.


3. Protect Your Energy Like It’s Sacred (Because It Is)

One of the hardest things I’ve had to learn is that not everything deserves my energy.
Not every phone call, crisis, committee, or conversation.

Recharging sometimes means setting sacred boundaries:

  • Saying, “I can’t be the strong one today.”

  • Postponing that meeting.

  • Telling someone, “I’m not available right now, but I’ll circle back when I have more to give.”

Your energy isn’t infinite. Guard it like a precious resource.


4. Recharging Isn’t Always Rest — Sometimes It’s Spark

Sometimes what recharges us isn’t rest. It’s aliveness. It’s that tingle of purpose, the spark of inspiration, the “yes, THIS is who I am” moment. That’s what Enlightenzz is for me. It’s what stained glass is for Jesse. It’s what writing, walking, dreaming out loud can be for you.

Recharging might look like:

  • Picking up a project that excites you

  • Learning something new just because you want to

  • Taking one brave step toward something that feels like yours

Rest is recovery. Spark is renewal.

The Truth About Being Recharged After 50

You don’t need to be “on” all the time.
You don’t need to be available 24/7.
You don’t need to feel guilty for wanting to feel like yourself again.

Being recharged means:

  • Feeling like your body is yours again

  • Feeling like your emotions don’t control you

  • Feeling like you have something left at the end of the day

It’s not just about surviving.
It’s about restoring your aliveness — one small, intentional choice at a time.
